How to Choose the Right Collar or Harness

If you've ever stood in the pet aisle (or scrolled online) feeling totally lost in a sea of collars and harnesses — you're not alone. Do you go with a cute one? Padded one? Step-in? Clip-on? What even is a no-pull harness?

Choosing the right collar or harness isn’t just about style — it’s about comfort, safety, and how your pet moves through the world.

So... Collar or Harness?

For Dogs:

  • Collars are great for dogs who don’t pull and just need a tag holder or occasional lead use.
  • Harnesses are better for everyday walks, especially for puppies, small breeds, or strong pullers. They reduce pressure on the neck and are generally more secure.

For Cats:

  • A breakaway collar is ideal indoors — it pops off safely if caught.
  • For outdoor walks, go with a cat-specific harness that fits snug but isn’t restrictive (yes, cats can walk on leads!).

What to Look For

  • Fit – You should be able to slide two fingers between the strap and your pet’s skin. Too loose? It can slip off. Too tight? That’s uncomfortable and unsafe.
  • Material – Look for soft, breathable, and durable fabric. Neoprene or padded nylon is great for comfort.
  • Clips & Fasteners – Easy on, easy off. Avoid anything fiddly, especially if you’ve got a wriggly puppy or cat.
  • Extras – Reflective strips, ID tag holders, or handles for control are helpful bonuses.

Every pet is different. Some love harnesses, some hate them. You might need to try a couple styles to see what your dog or cat prefers. And always check fit after a few wears — pets grow, shift weight, and straps can loosen.
